What areas of the island not to miss and where to stay with your campervan will be subject of this article.

The beauty of discovering Mallorca by motorhome is that you are flexible to travel to all corners of the island that a hotel guest is unlikely to see. How to get to Mallorca with a camper?

To discover Mallorca with a camper, there are two options.

Option number 1: You arrive with your vehicle

During your trip through Spain, there are many options to discover the mainland and then cross over to the Balearic Islands.

From Barcelona, Valencia and Denia, you can take your van to Mallorca with Baleria and Transmediterranea. However, the trip takes 7 to 8 hours and only with luck you get a ticket around 200€ for your round trip. In general, the prices are quite a bit higher though.

Option number 2: Rent a camper in Mallorca

The Southeast

Parc Natural de Mondrago

A piece of untouched nature and a unique natural scenery on Mallorca. This natural park was fortunately placed under nature protection in 1992, before the big investors could forge construction plans. Wonderful bays, beaches, rugged cliffs, pine forests and dune landscapes are waiting for you. Hiking and biking tours are possible on developed paths.

Tip: Outside the main season you have the paths almost for yourself.

Puerto de Cala Figuera

Located just outside the gates of the Mondrago Nature Park, you will find a romantic village. Time seems to have stood still in Cala Figuera, so you can still feel the old Mallorcan charm. The hike to the lighthouse along the harbor is an essential part of a visit to Figuera.

The East

Cala Sa Nau

This bay is said to be one of the most beautiful ones in Mallorca. However, it is no longer an insider tip. Arriving early or visiting in the low season is recommended. There is a beach shower and a beach bar with very good food. Snorkelers and divers are right at home at this spot and there is even a diveable cave on the southern side.

Cueva del Drac & Cueva d'Artà

Mallorca has more than 4000 caves and about 200 stalactite caves. Some of them are open to visitors and will take you to another world. On the east coast of Mallorca there are two underground caves which we highly recommend you to visit: The Dragon Cave (Cueva del Drac) just before the village of Porto Cristo and the Cueava d'Artà, east of the town of Canyamel and home of up to 22m high stalagmites. Both caves are tourist magnets, which is why it is a good idea to visit them in the off-season.

The Playa de Muro

The beach is 6 km long and is located in the northeast of Mallorca between the resorts of Puerto de Alcúdia and Can Picafort. It is a white clean natural beach, especially appreciated by families with children, because the coastline slopes very shallowly into deeper water.

Playa Coll Baix

Coll Baix is a dreamlike bathing bay northeast of Puerto de Alcúdia. It is only accessible on foot or by boat, which is why there are usually only a few bathers around. It takes around 45 minutes to hike from Puerto de Alcúdia to the bay. Take snorkeling equipment, swimming gear and a picnic and you are all set to spend a wonderful day at the beach.

The North 

Alcúdia

When driving through Mallorca, try to male a stop at the historical city Alcúdia. Next to Roman ruins you will find a charming old town, which lies behind historic city walls, on which you can walk. Especially in the evening hours you have a wonderful atmospheric view over the city and the surrounding area.

Pollença

Pollença with its harbor Port de Pollença is a very tranquil spot in the north of Mallorca. The old town with its narrow winding streets is best explored by foot. After a climb to the Calvary you have a fantastic view of the Tramuntana mountains.

Cap Formentor & Playa Cala Murta

If you are up for an adventurous drive through narrow, winding roads, you should head to Cap de Formentor. The headland of Formentor is located in the very north of Mallorca and offers you a unique view of the steep rocks jutting into the sea and the blue sea. On the way there you should stop at the viewpoints from time to time. The most beautiful view is offered by "Mirador de Sa Creueta".

If you want to combine the excursion with a small bathing session in a great and not overcrowded bathing bay, you can hike to Cala Murta and leave your car at the parking lot near Cala Figuera. You should have sturdy shoes for the hike. For parents with small children, however, the hike is rather not suitable.

The Northwest 

Serra de Tramuntana

The northwest of the island is especially suitable for hikers and mountain bikers. The long distance hiking trail GR221 or "Ruta de Piedra en Seco" crosses the mountains and is considered a challenging hiking trail and still remains largely spared from mass tourism. Sóller

Sóller and its port Puerto de Sóller are located in a fertile area in the Serra de Tramuntana. A highlight is the streetcar "Red Lightning", which runs through the middle of the old town of Sóller.

Torrent de Pareis

Torrent de Pareis is a rocky gorge and is one of the most impressive sights of Mallorca. The gorge has a raging torrent in the winter months, which has carved its way to the sea in the rock. It is best to arrive early or at sunset to avoid the large crowds of tourists. From the parking lot, a 20-minute walk leads to the cove. For this little climbing adventure you need reasonable equipment, weather information and provisions.

Central Mallorca

Are you a wine lover? Then we can recommend the "Ruta Del Vi" in the heart of the island, located below the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Mallorca has perfect conditions and looks back on a long history of wine growing.

Best time of the year to travel to Mallorca

Winter can be very humid in Mallorca due to the island’s location, even if it is mild. In the high summer months, which are also the main season, it can get up to 40 degrees in the interior. However, temperatures around 30 degrees are more common. Most pleasant for a motorhome roadtrip through Mallorca are the months of the low season from April to June and September and October.

Motorhome pitches in Mallorca

Campsites and pitches are rather a rarity on Mallorca, but you will still find some.

The most important thing in advance: wild camping is prohibited by law in Spain. It can still be tolerated at times, especially during the low season and in case of a respectful camping behaviour: no fires, no barbecues, dispose of garbage and not driving into nature reserves.
